This article is intended for families applying to the Georgia Promise Scholarship
Attendance and Eligibility
Students must be enrolled in public school for the two most recent consecutive semesters or be entering kindergarten in order to be eligible. Please note students who are currently attending homeschool or private school are not eligible to apply.
Students may not attend public school while using the Georgia Promise Scholarship. As such, they must transfer into a private school or home study program after approval in order to use the Georgia Promise Scholarship.
In other words, once students are required to opt in to the program, they are acknowledging they plan on using the Georgia Promise Scholarship Funds and will comply in removing their student from public school before continuing to opt in. Students must remain in public school until opting in to the program to ensure compliance.
What does opting in mean?
Opting in means the family is confirming their intention to use Georgia Promise Scholarship funds and will withdraw their student from public school before continuing to opt in. After opting in, students must remain enrolled in public school through the end of their current public-school semester to be included in the full FTE count. Families must withdraw the student only after the semester ends and before the start of the semester in which the student will receive scholarship funds.
For example, a student who applies in March must remain enrolled in public school through the end of the spring semester (June) and may withdraw prior to the start of the next school year. Similarly, a student who applies in September must remain enrolled in public school through the end of the fall semester (December) and may withdraw prior to the start of the spring semester.
